Crown
A crown is an artificial tooth placed over your own tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials. Because a crown is custom-made, it looks natural and blends in beautifully with the rest of your teeth.
When do you need a crown?
If a tooth is frequently filled, or if there's insufficient support for a new filling after a tooth breaks off, a crown can be made. A crown then ensures that your tooth is preserved. You can also have a crown made if you want to improve the appearance of your teeth, for example, if you're bothered by discoloration or deformity.
If a tooth is missing, a bridge or implant can be placed. An implant then serves as an artificial root onto which a crown is placed.
Treatment
Preparatory treatment may be necessary first, such as a filling or root canal treatment. To strengthen the tooth, a pin or abutment may be necessary. The dentist grinds down the tooth to create space for the crown. For a crown on an implant, the dentist places an abutment in the implant. An impression of the teeth is made. This can be done with an impression tray (biting) or digitally (scanning). Your bite pattern is also recorded, and the color of the crown is determined. The dentist can make the crown themselves or outsource it to a dental technician.
To protect the worn tooth, a (temporary) temporary crown is placed. Once the permanent crown is ready, the crown is fitted and inspected. The dentist then attaches the crown.
Materials
A crown can be made of various materials. The most suitable material will depend on the area of the tooth where the crown is to be placed and your preferences.
Porcelain or Zirconium
A porcelain or zirconium crown is tooth-colored and looks natural.
Metal and Porcelain
The base of the crown is metal, over which a layer of porcelain is applied.
Metal
Gold or silver-colored crown. A metal crown is very strong and durable.
Costs
The cost of a crown can vary depending on any pretreatments (filling, cast abutment, or root canal treatment) and the material chosen. A crown, including plastic reinforcement, one X-ray, and one anesthetic, easily costs €340, excluding material and technical costs. Therefore, always ask us about the treatment options and a cost estimate. A crown is not included in the basic dental insurance package. Reimbursement of (part of) the costs is provided by supplementary dental insurance.
Risks
There are virtually no risks associated with a crown treatment. However, you may need some time to get used to it initially, or your tooth may be sensitive. If it feels a bit too high, for example, your dentist can help. If the sensitivity persists or worsens, contact your dentist.
