Root canal treatment
When do you need a root canal treatment?
Your tooth can become infected due to decay, a leaking filling, or a fall, for example. Sensitivity to hot and cold, a swollen cheek, or severe toothache can all be signs of an infection. It's also possible that you don't have any symptoms (yet). Your dentist will discover this during a checkup X-ray or while filling your tooth.
Treatment
First, an X-ray is taken to assess the root development, and you will be given anesthesia. The dentist then places a rubber dam, also known as a rubber dam. This is a rubber flap that isolates the tooth, providing the dentist with a clean working area. The dentist drills open the tooth at the chewing surface and uses files to remove the inflamed tissue and nerve from the canal. The tooth is rinsed with disinfectant. The dentist fills the cleaned canals with rubber pins and seals the tooth with a filling. The treatment is often scheduled in two appointments. The canal filling and the tooth filling are performed during the second appointment. The tooth will then receive a temporary filling after the first appointment.
Costs
The cost of a root canal treatment can vary depending on factors such as the number of canals in the tooth and the complexity of the procedure. You can find a sample invoice here. Always ask your dentist for treatment options and a cost estimate.
Root canal treatment is not included in the basic health insurance for adults. Reimbursement of (part of) the costs is provided by your supplementary dental insurance.
Risks
Root canal treatment is not without risks. Complications can arise during the treatment. A file can break off and remain in the root tip, or a file may not follow the shape of the canal and perforate the root. A crown may be necessary if the tooth is severely weakened.
After the treatment, you may experience some pain. This should subside after a few days. If the symptoms persist or the pain is severe, contact your dentist.
